2nd Degree Hapkido Curriculum – First Stage

Attacker is using a slashing motion

#1 – Parry by passing with the same side hand into opposite side hand as you step out. Go into outside wrist lock. Example, they slash downward with their right hand so you pass with your left hand into your right hand.

#2 – Block on same side strike is coming and into a straight elbow lock using 90 or 180 step to finish

#3 – Outside block and step underneath for shoulder lock. Be sure to follow through so you don’t cut your thumb

#4 – two hand parry into elevated wrist lock, strip the knife (slash front ribs, slash back ribs, stab into clavicle artery.)

#5 – driving shoulder lock. Don’t care for this technique but it is effective backup to someone resisting a straight elbow lock.

#6 – two hand parry as if setting up for shoulder lock but rotating back to outside shoulder lock

#7 – skip

#8 – same set up as #4 using swing weight

#9 – same set up as #4 & #8 into a straight arm bar. Strip knife and use to cut into elbow joint for a chicken wing come along.

#10 – skip

#11 – blending throw

#12 – same set up as #3 into a straight arm throw as you duck under their arm (attacker must air roll out of this)

#13 – same side outside block with other hand striking under arm. Slide blocking hand up to wrist lock while striking hand goes on wrist pulling down into a shoulder lock taking the attacker to their back. Knee to the armpit and pull the knife out.

2nd Degree Hapkido Curriculum – Second Stage

Attacker is using a straight in stab motion

#1 – Cross block (x block) to an outside wrist lock (like #1)

#2 – Cross block (x block) to a straight arm lock (like #9)

#3 – Cross block (x block) to a arm pit elbow lock

#4 – Cross block (x block) to a hammer lock (assuming right hand attack), left hand goes to attacker’s right wrist and defender’s right hand goes to elbow to set up for hammer lock

#5 – Downward two hand palm block (assuming right hand attack), defender’s left shoulder to attacker’s right elbow for an elbow break or hyperextension. Then go into an elevated wrist lock stabbing them in the ribs and stripping the knife from the attacker. Can set up for scissors take down by posting off right hand and then stab to the chest.

#6 – Downward two hand palm block (assuming right hand attack), defender’s left shoulder to attacker’s right elbow for an elbow break or hyperextension. Then drop their right elbow on your left shoulder for elbow break. End with stepping under for a straight arm throw (similar to #12)

Attacker is using a backhand slashing motion

#1 – Assuming right hand back slash from attacker, defender steps out with left foot and raises both open hands to defend into a straight elbow lock using 90 or 180 step to finish (similar to #2)

#2 – Assuming right hand back slash from attacker, defender steps out with left foot and raises both open hands to defend, left hand goes to attacker’s right wrist and defender’s right hand goes to elbow to set up for hammer lock (similar to #4 X block defense)

#3 – Assuming right hand back slash from attacker, defender steps out with left foot and raises both open hands to defend into elevated wrist lock, strip the knife (similar to #4)

#4 – Assuming right hand back slash from attacker, defender steps out with left foot and raises both open hands to defend into driving shoulder lock. (similar to #5)

#5 – Assuming right hand back slash from attacker, defender steps out with left foot and raises both open hands to defend as if setting up for shoulder lock but rotating back to outside shoulder lock (similar to #6)

#6 – Assuming right hand back slash from attacker, defender steps out with left foot and raises both open hands to defend into swing weight (similar to #4 & #8)
