Intermediate Hapkido Curriculum
1st Quarter / December – February
Three Major Contributors to Hapkido are Sokaku Takeda, Yong Sool Choi, & Ji Han Jae.
Sokaku Takeda (10/10/1859 – 04/25/1943) was born in Japan and mastered many different martial arts during his life including sword, Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu, spear, staff, stick, shuriken, and others as well as an extremely accomplished Sumo wrestler. He founded the art of Daito-ryu aiki-jujutsu and has direct ties and influences on Ueshiba Morihei (1883-1969 founder of Aikido), Okuyama Yoshiji (1901-1987 founder of Hakko Ryu Jujutsu), Yong Sool Choi (1904-1986 founder of Hapkido), and Nakano Michiomi (1911-1980 founder of Nippon Shorinji Kempo)

Elevated wrist lock from same side wrist grab

Elevated wrist lock from lapel grab (secure to chest using hand from same side & strike attacker’s body as ducking under)
Elevated wrist lock from single wrist grab from behind

Thumb release to outside wrist lock from palm up lapel grab
Thumb release to wrist press hold from palm up lapel grab
Step Sparring:
Defender & attacker starts in parallel ready stance. Attacker steps forward in Front stance and punches with right middle punch. All step sparring ends with defender stepping back in Back stance and guarding block.
01 – Defender steps back using twin forearm block with right Back stance, left middle side punch in left fixed stance
02 – Defender steps back using twin forearm block with right Back stance, left (#1) side piercing kick (belt level)
Self Defense:
Personal protection – attacker steps forward with a forward punch. Defender steps into attacker shifting right foot at a 45-degree angle using a left outer forearm block that rolls into a wrist grab. Right inverted knifehand strike to side of neck with right foot simultaneously sweeping the attackers left leg and pulling on the attacker’s right wrist
