Mr Douglas Libby

Like many children growing up in the 70s and 80s, his father introduced young Douglas Libby to Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris movies as a young child.  That is where his love of martial arts started.

His father held a brown belt in Goju-Ryu Karate and Judo; daily, they would spar and wrestle for fun in the evenings after dinner.  As a teenager, he was very competitive while growing up in Chicago.  However, he struggled in school with a learning disability, but to help cope, his father signed me up for martial arts when he turned nine years old.  He was enrolled in Hon-Mee karate classes twice a week.  After a year, this was not enough.  He was then enrolled in Jidokwan Taekwondo called Lion’s Taekwondo outside Chicago, IL.  Master Park led the classes where he attended 11 classes a week, including the adult sparring classes.  He was the only youth allowed to do this.

During the summer in Chicago, there were tournaments almost every weekend, and he attended most of them.  Competing in sparring and forms was something he enjoyed and did well at.  At 13 years old, he obtained his black belt, and with that came more responsibility.  He helped Master Park every morning until closing time during the summer.  He helped with his private lessons throughout the day, then the youth and adult classes in the evening.  Master Park taught him that you could do Taekwondo no matter how old you are.  As a matter of fact, whenever he’d answer the phone with a customer, he’d ask their age.  No matter what age they said, his response was always, “Ah, very good age, very good age.”  He was right.

One of the biggest influences in his life is Grand Master Jin Yong Shi.  GM Shi is Master Park’s relative that helped out at the school.  He is a Grand Master in Chung Do Kwan Taekwondo.  The knowledge and talent GM Jin Yong Shi possessed were unbelievable.  The flexibility he has, even to this day, is astounding.  His forms and kicks are precise and strong.  At that time, looking at his hands, you could see that they had callouses.  He would condition his hands by hitting a piece of steel on springs.  He believed that whatever you hit, your hand becomes.  GM Shi decided he wanted to open his own Chung Do Kwan school, and Mr. Libby’s father felt it was best for him to go there.

Some years after, he and his family moved to Texas.  But they’ve stayed in contact with GM Shi and his son throughout the years.  He decided to get my bachelor’s degree in Biblical Literature because he had thought his path was to become a Youth Pastor at that time.  But this was not the case.  Not long after graduation, one of the biggest events in U.S. history happened with September 11, 2001.  He felt called to join the military, and he served in the U.S. Navy as a parachute rigger for seven years.  Towards the end of those seven years, he met his wife, Morgan.  He knew that Morgan wanted to finish her active duty Air Force career, leading them to Crestview, FL.

Now, he works full-time as a small business owner as a master drum builder and drum circle facilitator.  He creates spiritual tools that go nationwide to those who use them in their personal life, as well as their professional lives.  These tools are drums, rattles, shakers, etc…  They are used to help improve the quality of one’s life, especially when an individual suffers from PTSD, anxiety, depression, or any other problem.

Mr Libby said, “I can be found out on the mat at Gordon’s each week with both of my children, Douglas and McKenna.  Knowing that I am doing something that I love with my children is a blessing.  Seeing them grow into themselves and learn how to lead has been wonderful.  In addition to that, knowing that I help others at the school to do their best every day and improve, has been very rewarding.”
